Mason Melia signs for Tottenham Hotspur

Just before the winter window closed, Tottenham Hotspur managed to get a deal done for 17-year-old Irish forward, Mason Melia.

Sealing a deal was not easy for the Lilywhites, as they had to fend off Scottish side Celtic, who were also closely monitoring the young forward.

The teenager etched his name in the record books last year, becoming the youngest goalscorer in League of Ireland history after finding the net against UCD at just 15 years and 281 days old.

Melia built on that historic achievement with a remarkable season, featuring in 41 matches for St Pat’s across all competitions.

Mason Melia’s first interview after signing for Tottenham

On deadline day, Spurs confirmed the signing of the youngster from St Patrick’s Athletic for a fee of £1.6m, with add-ons included.

Following the transfer, the young forward became the first million-pound player to be signed from Ireland. He was given a five-year contract and is set to join Tottenham’s academy next season because of Brexit rules.

Spurs fans have now had a chance to meet their new signing, as the official club’s account posted an interview on X, asking him a series of questions.

The young forward opened up on what it is like to sign for Spurs, his goals for the season and his footballing idols.

When asked his thoughts on joining Spurs, Melia said: “I’m buzzing to be here. I think it’s every little boy’s dream to play for such a big, prestigious club like Spurs.”

On whether it has been an ambition of his to play in the Premier League, the forward said: “Yeah, I think it’s always been a dream. Hopefully, one day I can make it come true.”

Mason Melia looks up to Spurs legend Harry Kane

On the strikers he looks up to, Melia wasted no time, “Obviously, the likes of Harry Kane—obviously, he played for Spurs here—he was always one I looked up to. Sergio Agüero—I really liked him, good striker.”

On the records he holds at St. Pat’s, he said: “It’s great to have that behind your name, but it’s just what I do, I think. Just keep grasping it—hopefully, I can break more.

“I think I had the shirt on a lot last year. I think I started when I was 15, made my debut, obviously scored, and the last year’s been amazing—it’s got me to where I am now.”

When asked what his target for the next 12 months was, he said: “Just to improve myself and hopefully win a title with St Pat’s and come over here as a fresh start.”

At the moment, Mason Melia continues to ply his trade in Ireland but will meet up with Spurs in January 2026, the first window after his 18th birthday.
