Tottenham’s new non-executive chairman Peter Charrington breaks silence after Daniel Levy exit

Tottenham’s new non-executive chairman has spoken publicly for the first time since taking on the role, with his words marking the start of what feels like a fresh chapter in north London.

Tottenham Hotspur have been undergoing a steady stream of changes behind the scenes, changes that date back to last season when the boardroom first began to take a very different shape.

Vinai Venkatesham was appointed as Tottenham’s new CEO in April of last season, while Thomas Frank was installed as head coach following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou in the summer.

Donna Maria Cullen also brought her long association with Tottenham to an end as she stepped down from her executive role after over a decade of service, while Scott Munn vacated his post as chief football officer, as the club continued to make sweeping changes in the boardroom.

Tottenham’s non-executive chairman Peter Charrington pays tribute to Daniel Levy

Those changes continued this evening with the confirmation that Daniel Levy has stepped down from his position as chairman after 25 years in charge, a tenure that will be remembered as one of the most significant in the club’s modern history.

Levy, who had become one of the most influential figures in English football during his time at the helm, oversaw Tottenham’s move into their new state-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium while delivering two major trophies, the League Cup in 2008 and, most recently, the Europa League last season.

The departure of Levy opens the door to a new era, and that transition was marked by the words of Peter Charrington, the club’s newly appointed non-executive chairman, who paid tribute to his predecessor while setting out his vision for the future.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Charrington said: “I am very honoured to become Non-Executive Chairman of this extraordinary Club and, on behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Daniel and his family for their commitment and loyalty to the Club over so many years.

“This is a new era of leadership for the club, on and off the pitch. I do recognise there has been a lot of change in recent months as we put in place new foundations for the future.

“We are now fully focused on stability and empowering our talented people across the Club, led by Vinai and his executive team.”

Spurs begin a new era after summer departures

Spurs are not in action at the moment with club football on pause during the first international break of the season, yet the sense of change has not gone unnoticed amongst Tottenham supporters, who were left in disbelief following the departure of Levy.

This is a club beginning a new era, one that will aim to build on the success of their Europa League triumph while also striving for more consistency in the league.

Supporters have already had to come to terms with the departure of one of their longest-serving players in Heung-min Son, while popular figure Ange Postecoglou was also moved on despite bringing home a European trophy.

The expectation now is that all of these sweeping changes at every level of the club will eventually translate into results on the pitch, because that is the measure Tottenham will ultimately be judged by.

Levy was the Premier League’s longest-serving chairman but has faced criticism from Spurs fans in recent years over a lack of ambition and silverware.
