Tottenham’s summer transfer target was distracted claims pundit

Sky Sports pundit Stephen Warnock has claimed that Jack Grealish was distracted by the transfer rumours linking him with a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Aston Villa midfielder was heavily rumoured to be set for a summer switch to Spurs, with the player himself revealing an interview with the Telegraph in September that he was “95 per cent” sure he would be leaving.

Spurs were said to have tabled a £25million offer for the 23-year-old, but new Villa owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens snubbed the offer from Daniel Levy.

Grealish has since signed a new five-year deal with his boyhood club and is starting to show some of his best form after a quiet first few weeks to the new Championship campaign.

Such was the intensity of the link to Tottenham, Grealish thought that even on the morning of the transfer window closing that he would be joining the Premier League outfit.

Warnock admits he can understand the lure of a move to a big club would have turned Grealish’s head.

He told the Express: “I think he would have been distracted by Tottenham. It would have been human nature for that to have been the case.

“He’ll have seen what’s going on at Spurs and how exciting it is. New ground, top manager, and top-level players.”
