‘Tremendous experience’ – Pundit backs linked-away Spurs man to come good elsewhere

Alex McLeish has claimed that now is the right time for Harry Winks to leave Tottenham and backed the midfielder to come good at another club.

Winks endured the most challenging season of his professional career last year as he struggled to get a run of matches under his belt with Jose Mourinho at the helm.

There have been a few mixed reports about the 25-year-old over the past few weeks, with some sources suggesting Nuno Espirito Santo is prepared to give him a chance while others have claimed the Portuguese coach has told the midfielder he is free to leave.

It has been alleged that Tottenham value the England international at £30m but could accept a lower fee for him this summer.

Fabrizio Romano also hinted on his Twitch channel a few days ago that the midfielder’s future at Spurs is uncertain.

McLeish believes that Winks would prove a useful addition for someone else if the North Londoners are indeed open to offers for him.

The former Birmingham City boss told Football Insider: “He’s (Winks) now in the middle part of his career.

“He’s still got a few years ago, Harry. He looked a very impressive young player in his early days at Spurs.

“Like a lot of young players, they can kind of go off towards Everest and then plateau a little bit. They can also sometimes dip.

“Harry’s been through that kind of process. Now he’s got tremendous experience and confidence to be able to go somewhere else and really bring something to his new team.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Winks certainly appears as if he could do with a fresh start. I believe that he is a better player than he has shown at Spurs over the last couple of years.

If he can rebuild his confidence, the 25-year-old could be a useful addition for a team like Leeds, Southampton or Brighton, who have a possession-based approach.
