Trippier close to Spurs move

A slightly bizarre transfer story has reared its head today, according to the Telegraph Tottenham Hotspur are close to the signing of Burnley’s  Kieran Trippier.

Trippier operates as a right-back and is available for around £3.5million following the Clarets relegation from the Premier League.  Apparently we have beaten Liverpool to the signature of the former England Under-21 international.

If this is true, does it mean that DeAndre Yedlin is not actually viewed as a serious contender for Kyle Walker’s right-back berth or was it just a marketing gimmick?

Tripper’s contract contains a £3.5m release clause, of which Manchester City, stand to receive over £1.2m from any deal of which they inserted a 40% sell-on clause when they sold Trippier in 2012.

He made 41 appearances in all competitions for Burnley this season but it does seem bizarre that we are focusing on another right-back considering the recent arrivals of Yedlin and Dier.

  1. Well firstly Dier is not a right back, he is a central defender. As to the link, take it with a pinch of salt (it's that time of year). I cannot imagine why we would buy another right back with Walker and Yedlin already in place, unless of course Poch does not rate Walker or is concerned about his recent injuries. Yedlin is very young and one for the future, although Poch may even see him as a winger rather than a full back due to his phenomenal pace

  2. Walker is quick and very commited but he just can't defend – hi's positional sense is awful and he switches off at crucial moments – I for one would not be sorry to see he go – we need defenders who can defend.

  3. I hope the rumour is true. Walker has been getting worse and without Lennon to protect him his defensive weaknesses have been exposed. If Walker can recover his fitness maybe Yedlin will go out on loan. Also Walker may respond like Rose did to genuine contenders for his place.

I also hope we buy more players with premier league experience. Any transfer is a risk, but buying someone from a different league makes the risk even higher. It would certainly help if the players are bought early in the season.

  4. You can’t understand why we would be in the market for another right back!!!!? Walker has been god awful and is a liability, yedlin is clearly not up to standard or we would have seen more than 8 minutes of him! And it is not great for diers development as a centre back to keep playing RB! We need stability in that area of the field. We have one of the worst defensive records in the league! Is trippier the man I don’t know but look what happened to rose when we signed competition! Walker needs to get good or get out

  5. Walker's injuries are obviously raising doubts and concerns. This surely must be the beginning of the end for him

  6. would be a good signing as he is English, young and has PL experience for very little outlay. Send Yedlin on loan next season to a PL club as we did with Rose so that he can get experience of the league and ascertain his level after a season. Walker needs competition and Dier should be kept as a central defender not as a fill in. Lesson learnt is that we need 2 for each position to allow a PL team and a cup team with players switching between the 2 depending on performance
