Troy Deeney believes he would command the same fee as Tottenham star

Troy Deeney believes that, in today’s inflated market, he would be worth the same as Tottenham’s Brennan Johnson—and possibly even as much as Dominic Solanke.

Troy Deeney has not held back in his criticism of Tottenham Hotspur in recent weeks. The former striker, now a pundit, recently claimed that Spurs wasted their money on Kevin Danso, insisting the player is not good enough for the club.

Now, he has turned his attention to transfer valuations, suggesting he himself would be worth a big fee in today’s market. In fact, his self-valuation matches a number of the big-money Tottenham stars.

Deeney made 165 Premier League appearances across multiple clubs, bagged 47 goals and provided 21 assists.

Troy Deeney believes he is worth more than some Tottenham stars

Speaking on ESPN’s social media page, the forward was challenged to stay silent until an appropriate price tag for ‘prime Troy Deeney’ was mentioned.

He remained quiet as figures of £20 million, £30 million, and £40 million were thrown around, only reacting when he heard £50 million.

“Yeah, that’s more than enough. £50 million is more than enough. Nice round number,” Deeney responded. “I had £30 million offered for me before, with Leicester. So, working on inflation… do you know what I mean?”

When the reporter pointed out that Solanke had just moved to Tottenham for £70 million, Deeney seemed briefly taken aback – not that the £70m figure is even accurate anyway.

“He went for £70 million? Yeah, maybe I could keep going then. Maybe. Nah, £50 million… £50m is enough. I am a humble guy.”

How Deeney’s claim stacks up against the market

Given the modern transfer market, where prices have skyrocketed, Deeney’s £50 million estimation does not seem entirely outrageous. Even Jermain Defoe has acknowledged that English goalscorers command premium fees.

Here is a breakdown of Spurs’ recent signings for £30 million and above over the last two seasons:

PlayerAgeNat.LeftFee

Deeney might not have the technical finesse of some of the names listed, but given the way the market has evolved, his valuation debate is not as outlandish as it first seems.
