‘True captain’ – Didier Drogba sends classy message to Harry Kane after penalty miss

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has taken to Twitter to share a message of support for Harry Kane after the England captain missed a penalty and saw his side crash out of the World Cup last night.

It was a disappointing night for the Three Lions, and Tottenham Hotspur’s star man was right at the heart of the action as France ran out 2-1 winners and booked their place in the semi-finals of the World Cup at the expense of England.

France took the lead after 17 minutes with a fine strike by young midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni and were in control at half-time. But, Harry Kane scored from the spot after 54 minutes to level the score, and take his tally of international goals to 53 in 80 appearances (Transfermarkt).

That goal saw Kane become the joint top goalscorer for England, equaling Wayne Rooney’s record (FourFourTwo), but doing so in 39 fewer appearances. The 29-year-old had a chance to overtake Rooney, though, but couldn’t take it.

With England falling behind once more, Mason Mount won a penalty and Kane stepped up in the 84th minute. Unfortunately, Kane sent the ball over the bar and England were unable to find a way back into the game.

Drogba, who had already praised Kane last week for his ‘smart’ play (BBC Sport), had some words of encouragement for the Spurs star on Twitter.

He replied to a tweet from Kane to say: “It will hurt, but you are a true captain and leader. Really like the way you played during this World Cup, an example for strikers to watch: score, assist, hold and lead! It will take time to get over it but this will make you stronger!”

Harry Kane can hold his head high and I really hope he knows he is a national hero despite that miss. There is no other player you would want standing over that ball from 12 yards, and sadly, on this occasion, it just didn’t go to plan. I dread to think where we would be without him, and hopefully he will come back stronger than ever after this setback.
