‘Try and improve’ – Nuno asked why Dele and Winks were not in Burnley squad

Nuno Espirito Santo claimed that Dele Alli needs to improve when he was asked why the midfielder was left out of the matchday squad against Burnley.

Dele started Tottenham’s first six Premier League games of the season but the midfielder has not played a single minute in the league since the North London derby defeat last month.

The 25-year-old was handed a start in the Europa Conference League clash against Vitesse Arnhem last week but he was one of several Spurs stars who put in lacklustre displays as the Eredivisie side emerged 1-0 winners.

The England international did not even make the bench at Turf Moor yesterday as Tottenham overcame Burnley 1-0 to seal their progression into the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Reports indicate that the North London club are ready to listen to offers for Alli when the transfer window reopens in January and that he may have already played his final game for the Lilywhites.

When Nuno was asked in his post-match press conference why he made the decision to omit Alli from the squad, he responded (via Football.London:) “Not just Dele, it was Harry also.

“They are our players, we continue to focus on getting the best out of each of our players.

“Dele is one of the cases we have to try and improve.”

One certainly cannot accuse Nuno of having been unfair with Dele as the Portuguese coach has given him several opportunities.

One could argue that he has not played the 25-year-old in his favoured number ten role but the former MK Dons man has shown almost nothing to suggest that he deserves a continued run in the side.
