‘Try harder’ – Spurs star backs up Gareth Bale and sends important message to fans

Ben Davies has added his voice to Gareth Bale’s statement, calling on journalists and fans on social media to be kinder towards players.

After scoring a brilliant brace to take Wales one step closer to the World Cup on Thursday, Bale blasted the Spanish press for referring to him as a ‘parasite’ (Sky Sports).

The Welshman seemingly aimed his comments at Marca, who accused him of ‘sucking’ Madrid’s money while seeing out the remainder of his £15million-a-year contract (Daily Mail).

The 32-year-old also took to social media to ask who holds the media accountable for writing such slanderous pieces.

His Wales teammate Davies has now come out in support of Bale, calling for everyone to be kinder in light of the attention that mental health has received over recent years.

The Tottenham man not only addressed his point to journalists but also to fans on social media, insisting that players hear and see their comments.

The 28-year-old posted on his Instagram story: “In a world where mental health is a daily discussion, we must be kinder.

“Journalists, pundits, and social media users – people see and hear your comments. Let’s try harder to protect people who are trying their best.

“You never know who might be suffering privately.”

Davies has clearly done this to hint to some Spurs fans that he is aware of the abuse he has been getting over the years. I find it incomprehensible why some fans would write things like “get out of my club” under players’ posts. The anonymity provided by social media has exposed the worst in humanity.
