Two big factors could impact Tottenham’s £78m pursuit of Yan Diomande

Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of one of Europe’s most highly rated young forwards, Yan Diomande, has taken another twist, with fresh insight emerging on how realistic a January move may be.

Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande is not entirely new, with the forward regarded as one of the hottest prospects in Europe at the moment.

The 19-year-old has already registered seven goals and four assists in 16 appearances across all competitions this season and is valued at £78m.

It has also been reported that Spurs have already spoken to Diomande about a January transfer, with the Ivorian teenager said to be attracted by the idea of a move to north London.

Tottenham face obstacles in Yan Diomande pursuit

It is not going to be easy for Tottenham to land the wide forward, particularly during the winter window, and that is according to Miguel Delaney, writing in his newsletter for The Independent.

Delaney outlines both Tottenham’s interest in Diomande and the reasons why a January move is considered unlikely, while also touching on the player’s wider options later in the year.

Writing in his newsletter, Delaney said: “Leipzig’s Yan Diomande is another player attracting attention, widely regarded as one of the most exciting talents in the game.

“Tottenham Hotspur would love to sign him this January, but that is also seen as unlikely, as those close to the player feel he will have a much better range of options in the summer. This is particularly true in a World Cup year, where his Ivory Coast team could make some waves.”

What Spurs must do to sign Diomande in January

This report is far from a positive sign for Tottenham, who would likely struggle to land Diomande should several clubs begin circling.

That scenario has played out before, most notably with Antoine Semenyo, as Spurs pulled out of the race for the forward following interest from the so-called big six, with Manchester City ultimately completing the deal.

It is believed, however, that while a move for the Ivorian this winter would be difficult, it is not entirely impossible, though Tottenham would likely need to break the bank to convince RB Leipzig to part ways with Diomande, with the German club not willing to sell.
