‘Uncomfortable conversations’ – Pundit claims Conte could leave Spurs in the summer

Kevin Phillips has claimed that Antonio Conte could walk from Tottenham if he is not backed properly by the club in the summer transfer window.

Conte has made it clear that he feels there is a big gap in terms of quality between the Tottenham squad and the best teams in the Premier League.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold revealed last week that despite Conte’s ‘positive’ meeting with Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici, some Spurs players fear that the Italian could leave if he is not backed in the current transfer window.

However, when the Spurs boss was asked on Friday if he plans to see out his contract, he insisted that he is enjoying his time at the club.

Phillips believes that while there is no chance of Conte leaving at the moment, the big test for Tottenham will come in the summer transfer window.

The pundit claimed that the 52-year-old will not shy away from uncomfortable conversations with Levy and co in the background.

The former Sunderland striker told Football Insider: “He’s (Conte) only just come through the door so I don’t think there’s anything to worry about at this stage.

“Naturally, he will be a bit frustrated because there has not been the movement he would have liked.

“You can tell by his actions on the touchline that he is a very passionate and perhaps impatient guy. He will want players through the door as early as possible so he can get the best out of them.

“There is likely some uncomfortable conversations going on in the background but he won’t let it affect what he is trying to do.

“It will be interesting to see who Spurs bring in before the window shuts. The summer will be the biggest test though.

“If he isn’t backed in the summer, big decisions may be made. He could walk. At the minute, I do not see him going anywhere.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I understand why Spurs fans are so worried about Conte given that he is arguably the best coach the club have had in decades and he has a track record of walking if he is not backed.

However, it is worth remembering that Levy has loosened his purse strings over the last couple of years. With Paratici having a good relationship with Conte, one would expect our recruitment to be better over the coming windows.
