‘Uncomfortable situation’ – Manager suggests Spurs player is not impressing in training

Sevilla boss Quique Sanchez Flores has insisted that Alejo Veliz has simply not done enough in training to warrant starts, admitting that the striker has endured a difficult few months, having joined the club to get minutes under his belt.

Veliz’s loan move to Sevilla has not panned out the way the striker would have wanted, with the youngster having made just three appearances as a substitute for the La Liga side since his switch in January.

It was claimed by ElDesmarque (via Sport Witness) last month that the reason the 20-year-old is being overlooked is due to a power struggle inside the Andalusian side.

It was asserted that Sanchez Flores wanted the club to sign a more experienced option while sporting director Victor Orta was keen on the Tottenham man.

Whatever the reason behind his struggles for game time, Spurs will consider his five-month spell in Spain to be wasted and according to some reports over recent weeks, the Lilywhites have already started working on potential loan moves for the player in the summer (Fabrizio Romano).

Alejo Veliz is not impressing enough to warrant starts

The Sevilla boss has now insisted that his selection decisions have to do purely with what he has seen from various players in training.

When asked about Veliz’s struggles, the former Watford manager told AS: “We’re very (focused) about giving continuity to what we see in training. We don’t (decide) from one day to the next. We look during the week, we see what fills our eyes and makes us think.

“Alejo is in a very uncomfortable situation because he came to have minutes but he has lost prominence. People like (Dodi) Lukebakio, Lamela or (Lucien) Agoume are the ones on the starting blocks for the titles.

“Alejo is not in the first line of the next ownership, although we have him. We try to see his virtues and hide his shortcomings. But for our way of playing, other footballers give us a more positive situation.”

There is no doubt that Veliz would have been much better off staying at Tottenham and continuing to train under Postecoglou.

The club made a massive blunder by sending the striker to Sevilla and they will be extra careful this summer to ensure that they loan him to a club were the 20-year-old is guaranteed minutes.
