‘Unhappy choice’ – Ex-goalkeeper thinks player made mistake joining Spurs

Pierluigi Gollini made a mistake joining Tottenham Hotspur on loan last season, according to former Italy goalkeeper Lamberto Boranga.

Gollini had impressed in Serie A for Atalanta, leading to Spurs making an approach to take him on a season-long loan in the summer of 2021. The move came with an option for the North London side to make the switch a permanent one, too, should they wish (Sky Sports).

That clause was never activated by Spurs and Gollini made just ten appearances for the Lilywhites across all competitions, with six of those coming in the Europa Conference League (Transfermarkt).

After failing to push Hugo Lloris for the number one shirt, Gollini was allowed to return to Italy at the end of the season. However, since returning, he also failed to get back into Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini’s plans and was shipped out to Fiorentina on loan.

Gollini has made eight appearances for Fiorentina so far this season (Transfermarkt), but is struggling to earn the number-one goalkeeper jersey there too.

For a goalkeeper who was hoping to establish himself in the international set-up after his first cap in November 2019 (Transfermarkt), things have not gone to plan at all.

According to Boranga, who was speaking to Radio Firenze Viola, Gollini’s problems all started when he left Serie A to join Tottenham. The former Italy and Fiorentina goalkeeper spent his entire career in Serie A, and thinks Gollini should have done the same.

Boranga said: “In my opinion, Gollini made an unhappy choice last year when he was at Tottenham. He had to stay in Italy, once abandoned it is hard to return.”

You have to feel for Pierluigi Gollini a little. He was thriving in Serie A and decided to make the move to England and it just didn’t work out for him at all. Now he’s gone back to Italy and is struggling there, too. Hopefully, he can land on his feet somewhere, and soon.
