United legend “surprised” by Spurs progress

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs believes his former club desperately “need” all three points when they face a “fantastic” Tottenham Hotspur side this weekend , a side whom he admits have proven wrong his pre-season reservations.

We are locked on the same amount of points and five points with our Old Trafford rivals and five points behind leaders Manchester City heading into this Saturday’s highly anticipated meeting at Old Trafford.

“The performance of the weekend had to be Tottenham’s 4-1 victory over Liverpool,” the former Wales international told Sky Sports.

“I must admit I thought they would struggle to compete due to the improvements of the Manchester clubs and with Wembley, but you’ve got to say they are a fantastic team with a fantastic coach.

Giggs continued:”Without a shadow of a doubt playing at the Bernabeu helped prepare them for that game. Once you get those sort of results you have an invaluable belief.
“Coming through one of the most daunting experiences in football certainly would have made it a lot easier to face Liverpool at Wembley.

Giggs did say:”I’ll stick with going with one of the Manchester clubs for the Premier League but it is very, very close and a couple results between the top sides can turn that.”

“Manchester United versus Tottenham has always been, both at Old Trafford and White Hart Lane, an attractive game.

“Obviously we’ve got a good record over them at home and I would have said before the last week that Manchester United will win when they face Spurs on Saturday,” he added.

“However, I now think that United need to win it more than Tottenham. It’s a huge game and the crowd will really be up for it, but if you go after Tottenham they can get you.
“You always want to put in a good performance but United just need a scrappy 1-0 win. I think Jose Mourinho and the fans would take that and forget about producing an entertaining performance.”

So a lot of concern from the United legend ahead of our big game this weekend. We have more than matched United in recent seasons and I can imagine José will use the ‘park the bus’ tactics he is famous for.United are strong but they are beatable. What do you guys think, will we leave Old Trafford with all 3 points? Let us have your thoughts on the game

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Yep, progress.
    But have won nothing.
And haven't even been top of the table for a single day in these last 2 'great' seasons.
Huddersfield have been top more than Spurs.
    Hype overload.

  2. Spurs are getting better with every game and the demolition of Liverpool after the draw against Real Madrid proves my point. So Maurinho park as many busses you are up against the Kane factor! Go Spurs listen to your coach and continue to believe our time is coming and it is coming now!
