United scouts not convinced over Alderweireld

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United scouts are not entirely convinced about Toby Alderweireld and are considering alternatives, according to sources at the club.

The Belgian remains an option this summer – and United are odds-on favourites to land him – but MEN Sport understands the 29-year-old is not the preferred name on the club’s shortlist.

The article says it’s understood that scouts have expressed concerns about Alderweireld’s ‘profile’ and he is not a ‘100% target’ this summer.

The article goes on to say that United are believed to value the player at around £20m less than Tottenham’s asking price of more than £70m.

Such is the difference between the clubs valuations on Alderweireld, United are also looking further afield to the Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A for a potential starting centre-back, with a number of defenders understood to be on their radar, including Raphael Varane, Jerome Boateng, Kalidou Koulibaly, Milan Skriniar, Alessio Romagnoli, Jose Gimenez and Caglar Soyuncu.

United currently have five centre-backs on their books – Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo – but want to sign another.
