‘Unlikely’ – Journalist reveals James Maddison injury update for Tottenham

The Telegraph’s Matt Law has told the Last Word on Spurs podcast that James Maddison is unlikely to feature for Tottenham Hotspur this month.

Maddison had an outstanding start to his Spurs career and was one of the most in-form players in the Premier League in the first few months of the campaign, but the midfielder has not kicked a ball since injuring his ankle in the London derby against Chelsea at the start of November.

The likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Giovani Lo Celso have stepped up in the attacking midfielder’s absence to fill some of the creative void left by the former Leicester man.

However, Ange Postecoglou would be hoping to have the England international back as soon as possible as he possesses attributes that no one else in the Tottenham squad does.

Maddison is not yet close to a Tottenham return

While it is clear that Maddison is not going to play a part in Tottenham’s trip to Old Trafford this Sunday, Spurs fans might have hoped that the 27-year-old can recover in time for the FA Cup clash against Manchester City on January 27.

However, Law has now squashed those hopes, insisting that the Tottenham vice-captain is not likely to play any part in the FA Cup fourth-round clash.

Werner’s arrival has given Postecoglou a few more options as he could potentially play Lo Celso deeper and Kulusevski in the number ten role. Spurs can thus afford to give Maddison the time he needs to recover fully rather than rushing him back.
