Unpopular opinion: Tottenham should renew Jan Vertonghen’s contract

Tottenham Hotspur currently have three players leaving on free transfers in the summer, as well as any other outgoings over the next two transfer windows.

That’s a lot of senior players to lose in a short space of time and Pochettino may want to keep one or two of his most senior stars around the squad.

In my opinion, Eriksen is barely a Tottenham player at this point. The club, the fans, and the player seem to be waiting for the contract to tick down until a possible January sale or a summer exit.

I also get the feeling that Toby Alderweireld’s time in North London is coming to an end, even if Spurs do offer him a new deal.

However, Vertonghen has expressed his desire for a new contract at Spurs and I think the club should give him one (Guardian).

I would only be looking to extend the contract by one or two years, due to his age, but I believe Jan can come back from the poor form he is in.

Having an experienced central defender who knows how to play in big games would be invaluable alongside any young up-and-comers Spurs field next season.

After 285 games for the club (Wikipedia), Vertonghen still brings enough to the team to warrant an extension for me. Age, experience, a left-footed centre-back, a left-back option, and hopefully a whole lot of talent if he can pick his form back up.

As long as Spurs invest as well as offering out new deals, Vertonghen would be in line for me.
