‘Up for grabs’ – Graham Roberts believes defender could be put up for sale

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Graham Roberts has suggested that Eric Dier could soon be put up for sale.

Dier, 27, has featured regularly in the Spurs side this season, starting all of the club’s 11 Premier League games to date.

The England international has also played in both of Antonio Conte’s first two games in charge of the club against Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference League, as well as the 0-0 draw against Everton.

Dier has been part of a defensive line that has struggled for consistency this season, but with former Chelsea boss Conte at the helm, a switch to a back-three looks set in stone for the long-term.

The side has already looked a lot more sound defensively since the Italian’s arrival, with Dier placed in a trio alongside Cristian Romero and Ben Davies over the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon.

However ex-Spurs man Roberts feels Colombian international Sanchez is a better fit for the side in a back-three, and hints the club could end up placing Dier up for sale sooner rather than later as a result.

Speaking to This Is Futbol, he said: “[Davinson] Sanchez, I think he’s a better centre-half than Eric Dier because he is a natural centre-half. Dier, I think he’ll be up for grabs.”

Spurs do have options when it comes to the centre-backs, but some of them don’t look good enough really. However, unless Spurs receive an offer for Dier that is hard to turn down, it doesn’t look too likely that they will shift him on as the opportunity to cash in has passed.
