‘Useless to deny it’- Club president confirms Spurs target will be sold this summer

Genoa president Alberto Zangrillo has admitted that the Serie A club cannot match the ambitions of Albert Gudmundsson and that the rumoured Tottenham target is expected to make a big move this summer.

If you have been following Spurs Web’s coverage over recent weeks, you will know that the speculation over Gudmundsson’s future has gone into hyperdrive, with the Iceland international widely being backed to swap Genoa for a bigger club this summer.

A number of reports from Italy have suggested over recent weeks that it is currently a three-horse race for the versatile forward between Tottenham, Inter Milan and Juventus (SportItalia).

It has also been suggested by various sources that the Lilywhites might hold an advantage in the race as they would be able to meet Genoa’s asking price while the Bianconeri and the Nerazzurri might find it quite difficult to do so (Tuttosport via Sport Witness).

Last week, Gudmundsson himself handed Spurs a boost by admitting that he harbours dreams of playing in the Premier League in the future (The Telegraph).

Albert Gudmundsson likely to be sold this summer

Zangrillo has now admitted that the forward wants to test himself at a higher level and insisted that Genoa will not stand in his way.

When asked about the speculation over Gudmundsson, the Italian club’s president said (via FC Inter News): “He is a young, serious guy, who wants to cultivate ambitions that we are not able to guarantee at the moment. It is useless to deny it. He has a national and international market, it is correct for both parties to make evaluations, what matters is the final result.

“I don’t deal with these things, let the player dream and leave it open to us to operate correctly on the market. We have learnt to love our boys; we can make good transactions and think that in a few years Albert can say ‘If it wasn’t for Genoa I would not be here’.”

It sounds like Genoa are already resigned to losing Gudmundsson at the end of the season. Given the relationship that Tottenham have forged with the Serie A club recently, one would think that the North London side are in the driver’s seat to complete the deal.
