Van der Vaart backs rumoured Spurs target to come good at current club

Former Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has backed Ajax star Edson Alvarez, who has been linked with a move to Spurs, to turn around his form at the Dutch giants.

Ajax spent £13 million to sign Alvarez from Club America last summer, making the Mexican international the club’s fifth most expensive signing.

The central defender arrived from Mexico with a growing reputation and was tipped to replace Matthijs de Ligt, who left the Eredivisie champions to join Juventus last summer.

However, the 22-year-old has struggled to establish himself in Erik ten Hag’s side this season with a report in De Telegraaf suggesting that the Ajax boss is yet to be convinced by the defender.

The report claims that Tottenham are prepared to give the centre back a fresh start and considering making an offer for him in the summer.

Van der Vaart, who also played for the Dutch side during his career has no doubt about Alvarez’s quality and believes it is only a matter of time before he starts performing for Ajax.

The former Spurs star told Marca Claro: “He (Alvarez) is a very good player, but he is at Ajax. The team has a lot of quality, players who play the same position as him.

“He is young, he is a fighter. In the end, he will play a lot.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I just don’t see why it will make sense for us to move for someone who can’t even get into the Ajax side. We are almost certain to be in for at least one central defender in the summer but Alvarez will be a massive risk as he is completely unproven in Europe.
