Vertonghen full praise for team-mate

Jan Vertonghen reckons our Great Dane Christian Eriksen is in the form of his life and believes he was aware of his team mates potential when the two were at Ajax.

Eriksen joined Ajax in 2008 while Jan was in the Dutch club’s Academy in 2003. They won successive Eredivisie titles in 2010-11 and 2011-12 and then Vertonghen switched to Spurs, while Eriksen went on to complete a hat-trick of titles in 2012-13 before joining the defender in N17.

The duo both had excellent seasons as we finished third in the Premier League in 2017-18, earning places in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

Eriksen when on to net 14 goals and created 10 assists in the Premier League – only the third Spur to hit double figures for both behind Jurgen Klinsmann (1994-95) and Emmanuel Adebayor (2011-12).

“We’ve played together for a lot of games!”:Jan said speaking to the club website. “I can remember his first training camp with the group at Ajax in Portugal when he was 17. He’s one of those guys when you think ‘yes, he has the skills and mentality to get there.’

He added: “I can remember him playing left and right foot, scoring goals, giving assists from the first session I met him at that age, 17.In the last two, two-and-a-half seasons he’s levelled up so much. You can see in games sometimes that he carries us and takes control.

Vertonghen added: “He’s really grown up in his game physically, dominating and it’s definitely been his best season at Spurs and the best season I’ve played with him. He’s still young and he’s one of the guys you always see in the gym, on his own, doing his work and he’s had that mentality from a very early age. He’s a great player to have in the team.”
