Vertonghen praises Spurs dressing room bond

Speaking to the club website Jan Vertonghen has described our current squad as ‘the best group I’ve been with’.

That bond has helped the squad overcome some big disappointments to qualify for the Champions League for the third-successive season with a third place finish in the Premier League in 2017-18, adding that it’s only the third time in the Club’s history we’ve finished in the league’s top three for three seasons on the trot after 1949-50 to 51-52 and 1959-60 to 62-63.

The stats show or as our second-best season of the Premier League era behind our second place in 2016-17 but you then add our Champions League campaign – victories over Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund home and a 2-2 draw at Juventus as well as reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup so it’s no surprise to see Jan talking about an improvement.

Jan had a superb season last season as he passed the 250-appearance mark for the Club.

“We’ve a great group of players,”:he said. “If you hear how loud the dressing room is at the training ground and the vibe in there, how everyone gets along, the discussions we have…it’s a great bunch of guys on and off the pitch. They are definitely the best group as players and the best group as guys that I’ve been with.

He added:”If you look at the strength of the league – and we always talk about the strength of the top six – you have to be very strong to get in that top four, especially when you compete in different competitions as we have.

He went on to say: “We’ve done very well. We’ve had a great couple of runs, beaten good teams home and away and our season has improved compared to last season. Okay, we finished second last season but a top four finish, improving in the Champions League, we wanted that (FA Cup) final as well, but that gives us something to improve on next season.”

Jan’s consistently excellent performance earned him a place in the PFA’s Premier League Team of the Year as well as claiming the Club’s One Hotspur Members’ Player of the Season award as he played in 47 of our 55 matches in all competitions.

And recently the Belgian powerhouse was described as ‘an inspiration”:by Eric Dier.
“That’s nice, especially coming from a team-mate,” said Jan. “Most of the time Eric and I meet at breakfast and then meet in the gym before training because there are a couple of similar exercises we both do. We laugh a lot together. I see that as a big compliment coming from a player and person like Eric”

He added: “I’m delighted with how the season has gone,” he continued. “From start to finish I’ve been quite consistent. I’m a happy man and pretty happy with my own season, yes.”
