Vertonghen’s agent speaks on his future at Spurs and his reaction to being substituted

Jan Vertonghen’s agent his opened up on the defender’s future at Tottenham Hotspur along with the incident on Wednesday night.

During the opening 10 minutes of the second half of the 3-2 win against Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round replay, Jose Mourinho decided to enforce a tactical change by replacing Vertonghen with Gedson Fernandes.

The 32-year-old left the pitch behind Hugo Lloris’ goal in front of the north stand and looked inconsolable having been substituted as he trudged back to the dug out.

While some reports claimed that the former Ajax player had the look of a player who knows his time at the club is coming to an end (Standard), his agent has dismissed such claims.

Tom De Mul, who represents the Belgian has insisted that Vertonghen is now feeling better and was instead frustrated at the team’s performance as well as his own.

De Mul claims that Vertonghen, who is out of contract in North London at the end of the season is still motivated to win trophies at Tottenham and has his eye on this summer’s Euro 2020 championship.

With the prospect of the defender becoming a free agent in the summer, there have been no talks about extending Vertonghen’s contract at the club despite the fact that De Mul claims there is still a healthy relationship between both parties.

He told Belgian news outlet HLN: “He’s feeling better now. His reaction had nothing to do with his future. He was just disappointed when he got subbed off. Unhappy about his performance and the team’s performance in the first hour.”

“Jan still wants to achieve great things with Spurs. He wants to qualify for the Europa or Champions League, to win the FA Cup. He is 32, but still very ambitious. He is focused. He still has so many targets. The Euros are a super important goal too.

“Jan is still super happy at Spurs and loves London. He is still very committed. There’s a lot of respect for Tottenham, just like there is a lot of respect from the club towards us. That’s logical after 8 seasons. There is a connection.

“We haven’t reached an agreement as yet, but we don’t rule out anything. There’s interest in him as a free agent, but Spurs is a very interesting option for us. The door’s still open”
