Vertonghen’s Hazard snub

According to The Metro Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen refused Belgium captain Eden Hazard’s offer to wear the skipper’s armband in his record-equalling appearance in the victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday evening, a game in which Vertonghen also scored

Our SuperJan won his 96th cap for the Red Devils in Sarajevo, drawing level with legendary Belgian attacking midfielder Jan Ceulemans, who set the current cap record back in 1991.

To try and make his day extra special, Chelsea’s Hazard asked Vertonghen would he like to to take on captain duties for the World Cup qualifier, but the former Ajax man surprisingly declined Hazards kind invitation.

The Belgian spoke to reporters after recording the milestone, where he revealed Hazard’s classy gesture but felt it would be inappropriate to wear the armband.

‘I’ve thanked Eden, but he’s our captain,’ the 30-year-old said after the match.
