‘Very Postecoglou-like player’ – Journalist reveals Spurs want Championship star

Journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that Leicester City starlet Kasey McAteer has now emerged as a target for Tottenham Hotspur.

Over the last couple of days, several outlets have reported that Spurs are trying to tie up a deal for an exciting young winger in the form of Antonio Nusa, who the Lilywhites are thought to view as one for the future (The Athletic).

Jacobs has now revealed that the North London club are also tracking another pacy young wide-man, who is now making waves in the Championship – McAteer.

The 22-year-old first made his debut for Leicester’s senior side back in December of 2021, coming on as a substitute for James Maddison in a 4–0 win against Newcastle United.

The youngster has since had a couple of loan spells away at Forest Green Rovers and AFC Wimbledon, but he is now starting to establish himself as a key player for the Foxes in the second tier this campaign.

Tottenham are looking at Kasey McAteer

Jacobs has revealed that Tottenham are now planning for the long term and see McAteer as a player who could potentially thrive in Postecoglou’s system.

However, the journalist makes it clear that the Premier League side are not imminently about to move for the winger and explains that Leicester are well aware of Spurs’ interest.

Jacobs told GiveMeSport: “McAteer is a very Postecoglou-like player, and he’s had a breakthrough season at Leicester. So, this is someone on Spurs’ radar, more for 2025 than 2024.

“But circumstances could change things. So, as far as McAteer is concerned, he’s extremely settled at Leicester and has played 13 games in the Championship, scoring four goals. He also got injured early in the 2023/24 season.

“But what Spurs like about him in terms of tracking him and planning potentially for the long term is that he’s a very Postecoglou-like player.

“He has high energy, can score goals, has a high ceiling, is still young, and can play attacking midfield, in central areas or as a right-winger. But Leicester know this as well.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is quite clear that Tottenham are now focused on future-proofing the squad and are trying to secure young gems before they explode on the big stage.

That suggests that the club have faith in Postecoglou’s ability to develop young players, which makes a big change to the likes of Mourinho and Conte, who clearly preferred experienced, proven performers.

It almost feels like Tottenham’s transfer strategy has gone back to what it was in the Pochettino era (and perhaps even in the Martin Jol era), with Postecoglou perhaps even being more comfortable working with younger players who are humble rather than big egos.
