Some Spurs fans on social media have been left surprised by Mauricio Pochettino being linked with the Benfica job this week.
The former Tottenham Hotspur boss has been without work since parting ways with the North Londoners during November of last year.
The Argentine has been linked with the Newcastle job in recent weeks with the former Spurs boss said to be the club’s prospective new owners’ first choice to replace Steve Bruce at the helm (Sky Sports).
However, reports linking him with the Magpies have died down in recent weeks.
Portuguese publication Record have now claimed that Benfica are targeting an ambitious move for the former Spurs and Southampton manager.
The Portuguese giants, who currently sit just three points behind league leaders Porto, are said to be ready to part company with current boss Bruno Lage, and spend big to get Pochettino in.
Some Spurs fans were surprised to hear that the 48-year-old was in talks with Benfica as they felt the job was not a big enough one for someone of Pochettino’s calibre.
Think he’ll wait for something bigger than that mate.

Could defo see Pochettino at Benfica. Two things. Will they give him money to spend and how fast can he learn Portuguese? ?♂️

Very strange choice of job? Think he could get the Juve or Dortmund jobs at the end of the season
— Josh (@josh_wiggan) June 28, 2020
He deserves so much better than that. He should get the juve job when Sarri gets sacked

He would be crazy to manage Benfica. It’s a great club with an amazing history but the Portuguese league is so weak. He should hold out for a job in one of Europe’s top leagues.

Aww man. He needs to go to a top 5 league at least. Well, except England. ?

I love Poch. He has the money to wait and he should wait for the job he wants not the job that’s available. I just hope it’s not in the PL.

Spurs Web Opinion
Pochettino has made it pretty clear that he is willing to talk to any club to see how interesting their project is. Just because he is ‘in talks’ does not necessarily mean he wants the job. In fact, I am not convinced that Pochettino has said yes to Newcastle either. There could potentially be vacancies at the likes of Barcelona and PSG if he is willing to be a little more patient.
