Vicario explains why he is ‘not worried’ about Tottenham’s set-piece issues

Guglielmo Vicario is confident that Tottenham will improve their defensive record from set-plays, insisting that the players just need to attack the ball more.

Tottenham have conceded quite a few goals from corner kicks and free kicks this season and the topic of their defending from dead-ball situations has been in the headlines recently, partly because of Ange Postescoglou’s repeated insistence that it does not concern him.

The Australian has reiterated that he will not be spending any extra time working on set-piece defending in the training ground as he does not believe that it will help his side close the gap with the best teams in the division (Alasdair Gold).

Vicario is not worried about Tottenham set-pieces

Vicario has also insisted that he is not worried about the problem, remarking that Tottenham simply have to win the first ball.

When asked about the goals that Spurs have conceded in set-pieces off late, the goalkeeper said: “I’m not worried, we have to embrace this challenge and demand more from each other.

“For me, it’s about the mindset to win the first contact and the desire, not to let them win the first contact of the ball, it’s just that. We are not at the level we have to be.”

While Postecoglou has looked an extremely calm figure on the touchline for much of the season, we have seen him quite animated recently, particularly in Tottenham’s loss to Stamford Bridge last week, where the Australian appeared to be screaming at his players to play forward.

Vicario admitted that the 58-year-old was not too pleased with what he saw from his side in the London Derby.

The Italian said about the 2-0 loss: “He was annoyed by our performance. It’s clear that we haven’t been playing our best football, we know that. We tried very hard to change something but we didn’t do that at all. “

The Tottenham players certainly need to show more intent in attacking the ball during set-plays and Vicario should not hesitate to push players out of the way if they are infringing him.
