Video: Toby Alderweireld backs under-fire Spurs star to bounce back

Toby Alderweireld has defended Steven Bergwijn and backed the winger to bounce back after he came in for criticism from pockets of supporters on social media following Tottenham’s loss at Anfield on Wednesday.

After receiving abuse from some fans on social media for missing two great chances in the 2-1 loss to Liverpool, the winger reportedly limited comments on his Instagram account.

Jose Mourinho defended the Dutchman ahead of Tottenham’s clash against Leicester City on Sunday, insisting that his side win and lose together.

Alderweireld has insisted that the former PSV Eindhoven man would have been hailed as a hero if his shot against Liverpool had hit the back of the net instead of cannoning off the inside of the post while the score was still level at 1-1.

The centre-back insisted that Bergwijn has the ability and mental toughness to get back to his best.

Bergwijn was just an easy target for some fans to direct their frustration at following a disappointing result at Anfield. In truth, Kane’s miss from the resulting corner after Bergwijn hit the post, was a much easier one to put away. Besides, Sunday’s result showed us that the Dutchman’s finishing is hardly our biggest problem at the moment, given the side’s inability to fashion clear cut chances or grab games by the scruff of the neck.
