Video: Benitez claims Richarlison will ‘not make the difference’ for Spurs

Former Everton boss Rafa Benitez has claimed that he does not expect Richarlison to be the one who will make the difference for Tottenham this season since the North London club have many good players already in their squad.

Richarlison has made a promising start to his Spurs career, having scored twice and provided two assists since his switch (Transfermarkt).

Antonio Conte would have been hoping that the increased competition for places upfront following the Brazilian’s arrival would help bring the best out of his players.

That certainly happened on Saturday, with Son Heung-min coming off the bench against Leicester City to score a hattrick in the second half.

Benitez has now described Richarlison as a ‘very good player’ but insisted that the 25-year-old will face a much bigger challenge at Spurs than he did at Goodison Park, given the players he will be competing against.

I can certainly understand where Benitez is coming from as Richarlison is not a guaranteed starter at Spurs, as he was at Everton. However, I do think he has made a big difference.

His arrival has guaranteed that Conte will have at least one top-class forward to turn to on the bench in every game, which was not the case at Tottenham in previous seasons.
