Video: Broadcaster claims Spurs may have advantage in top-four race after transfer activity

Television broadcaster Mark Pougatch has said that Tottenham Hotspur now might have the upper hand over their rivals in the race for a top-four finish after the transfer business which Antonio Conte’s men undertook on deadline day.

It proved to be an eventful deadline day for Spurs, with the club confirming the capture of Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancour.

There were also a string of departures from North London, with Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil being loaned out to Lyon, Villarreal and Valencia respectively while Dele Alli completed a permanent move to Everton.

It remains to be seen if the additions of Kulusevski and Betancourt will be enough to fire Spurs to Champions League qualification.

However, Tottenham were certainly more active in the window than their rivals for the fourth spot.

While Man Utd and West Ham did not make a single signing in the January window, Arsenal’s only two acquisitions were Matt Turner and Auston Trusty from the MLS.

Pougatch has suggested on talkSPORT that it could be advantage Spurs in the race for the fourth spot.

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that none of Arsenal, Man Utd and West Ham really strengthened their squad shows how difficult it is to pull off transfers in January. Clubs around Europe are usually not willing to sell their top players mid-season.

While Kulusevski’s and Bentancour’s additions may not be particularly exciting, they were probably the best we could have got in January, particularly considering that Traore and Diaz prefered moves to Barcelona and Liverpool respectively.
