Video: Emerson Royal sent off within 20 minutes of his return to Brazil team

Emerson Royal’s return to the Brazilian national team has lasted just twenty minutes after the Tottenham Hotspur player was sent off.

The 23-year-old was named in Tite’s starting eleven for their World Cup qualifier against Ecuador.

The right-back picked up his first yellow card of the match inside the opening minute and was again in the referee’s book when he jumped to challenge for the ball and his foot made contact with the groin area of one of his opponents.

The match has had plenty of drama with both sides having been reduced to ten men in the first half, after Ecuador goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez had earlier been shown a straight red for a dangerous high footed challenge.

Royal can consider himself somewhat unlucky to have picked up the second booking with replays showing his eyes were firmly on the ball and was unfortunate that his foot made contact as a result of his jumping position.

The defender will now likely return to London due to his impending suspension at international level that will see him miss the visit of Paraguay in their next fixure.
