Video: Ex-Spurs academy graduate Marcus Edwards scores stunning curler

Former Tottenham starlet Marcus Edwards opened his Sporting account at the weekend as he scored a stunning effort in his side’s win over Vitoria.

Edwards, 23, joined reigning Primeira Liga champions Sporting in January for a reported fee of £7 million (Daily Mail).

He recently made a return to England to face Manchester City in the Champions League and played more than 30 minutes as Pep Guardiola’s side eased into the quarter-finals with a 5-0 win on aggregate.

Edwards’ cameo at the Etihad Stadium was his fifth appearance from the bench, with his promising display earning him a start against Moreirense a few days later.

He was forced into starting among the substitutes on Saturday against former side Vitoria, but made a huge impact in just four minutes by notching his first Sporting goal in impressive fashion.

The winger picked up possession outside the box before shifting it onto his right foot and firing a wicked bending effort into the top corner, which gave goalkeeper Bruno Varela no chance.

It means Edwards has scored on his seventh appearance for Sporting, which has taken his overall season tally up to nine in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

It is great to see that Edwards has forged a nice career for himself by going a different route into a lesser-spoken about European league.

The goal really showed how talented he is, but also how versatile he is considering it was on his supposed weaker side.
