Video – Ex-Tottenham star labels Pochettino as ‘petty’ for dropping key players

Tottenham Hotspur boss, Mauricio Pochettino, has taken the strange decision to drop two of his best and most established stars this season.

Since the start of the campaign, Jan Vertonghen has not played a single minute, being placed on the bench twice and dropped from the squad completely for the other match.

Christian Eriksen has also only started one match out of the three, coming on as a late sub in the remaining two.

Jermaine Jenas has now labelled Pochettino’s continuing decision to drop them as petty and believes it will cost Spurs a Champions League spot.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Pochettino has shown time and again that he puts his own ego above the best interests of the club, the snubbing of Vertonghen and Eriksen being only the latest of several ‘I’m going to show who’s boss’ episodes over several years, going back to Bentaleb and Kaboul, through Walker, Rose and Alderweireld to the current ‘freezees’. In the old days, managers were far stricter disciplinarians than their modern counterparts, but they usually managed to keep player problems hidden behind the dressing room door, and Pochettino’s habit of hanging his bad boys out to dry in public only adds to the general discontent at Spurs – I for one won’t be shedding any tears if he does indeed call it a day after the NLD.
