Video – ‘He was always happy’ – Poch speaks out on Eriksen’s mood and mindset

For a moment or two in the summer, it seemed as if Christian Eriksen may move away from North London after he revealed a desire to do so (Ekstra Bladet).

Eriksen claimed that he was looking for a step up and a new challenge after the Champions League Final loss to Liverpool in June.

However, somewhat surprisingly, the press reported no concrete bids for the Great Dane all summer, with the European window slamming shut on September 2.

This means that Eriksen will definitely be a Spurs player until at least January, but it remains to be seen as to whether he signs a new deal between now and then.

A lack of bids this summer may have been down to the fact that Eriksen would currently be available to talk to non-English clubs in January about a free summer move.

Despite all the uncertainty, Pochettino has been starting Eriksen of late, the Dane has been scoring, and the gaffer insists he has always been happy.

Poch said (Football London): “He’s happy. He was always happy. He never said he wasn’t happy here. Everyone, of course, has aims, goals, challenges. I told you before the Arsenal game he was in his right mind and that’s why I played him. Always he was an important player for us. In our sixth season, we’ve always appreciated him a lot. His qualities are there and important for the team. He’s happy and if we believe he deserves to play then he’s going to play. It’s not because he has less than one year on his contract we’re going to take a different decision. All decisions are based on performance.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I have to say, at no point this Premier League season has it seemed that Eriksen is unhappy or not trying his best out there. He masterminded the Aston Villa comeback and scored in the North London Derby to start with. Let’s just hope a new deal can be reached or a swap deal involving Dybala in January.
