Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has claimed that Gareth Bale does not fit the bill in terms of what Tottenham need this season.
The Welshman has returned to North London on a season-long loan deal (Spurs official), seven years after leaving Spurs to join Real Madrid for what was a world-record transfer fee back in 2013..
However, Merson insisted that the 31-year-old will not enjoy playing for Jose Mourinho given the defensive responsibilities that he will have foisted upon him.
The former England internatonal questioned if Bale wants to finish his career playing the kind of football that the Spurs boss is known for.
Watch what Merson told Sky Sports about the winger’s return to Tottenham:
"I'm not sure he's going to want to be playing on the edge of his own box…" 🤨

I believe that Jose’s counter-attacking system will be a perfect fit for a player of Bale’s attributes. In fact, the Welshman’s best season of his career to date was under Andre Villa-Boas when we similarly sat off teams and looked to pick them off.
