Video: Pape Matar Sarr picks up an assist as Senegal register important win

Pape Matar Sarr played a starring role for Senegal, who registered a win over Cameroon in what was one of the most high-profile encounters of this edition of the African Cup of Nations so far.

Sarr sat out the first game of the tournament owing to an injury as Senegal overcame Gambia 3-0 last week but the Tottenham man recovered to start against the Cameroonian’s.

The 21-year-old delivered a typically energetic display in the middle of the park and made a crucial contribution in the final third to help his side open the scoring.

Determined Sarr grabs an assist at AFCON

On 16 minutes, when Cameroon cleared a corner kick from their box, Sarr put his body on the line to get to the ball first, knocking it into the path of Ismaila Sarr, whose deflected effort put Senegal 1-0 up.

That set Aliou Cisse’s men on course to a 3-1 win, with Sarr completing 74 minutes before being replaced by Everton’s Idrissa Gueye.

This result confirms Senegal’s place in the knockout stages, which is not great news for Spurs as it means Sarr will be at the Ivory Coast a little longer. However, the experience of playing in such big matches in a higher-profile tournament will do wonders for the 21-year-old’s development.
