Video: Pundit blasts Tottenham’s decision to sign Gedson Fernandes

ESPN pundit Gabriele Marcotti has blasted Tottenham’s decision to sign Gedson Fernandes from Benfica.

Spurs announced on Wednesday that they had signed Fernandes on an 18-month loan deal with the option to make it permanent.

Speaking ahead of the deal being confirmed, Marcotti questioned the 21-year-old’s quality on the back of his lack of game time for Benfica this season and boldly asserted that he will not make Spurs a top-four team.

In a conversation with Julien Laurens, Marcotti also claimed that there were other areas of the Spurs squad that were in more urgent need of strengthening than central midfield.

Laurens also questioned the wisdom in going for a future prospect like Fernandes over someone more experienced who could help solve the team’s current issues.

It is clear that neither Marcotti nor Laurens have watched Spurs very frequently this season. While we might have quite a lot of central midfielders in the squad, we do not have a centre midfielder capable of beating a man or dictating play from deep. While there is no guarantee that Fernandes will be a success, since it is a loan deal with an option to buy, the transfer is a relatively risk-free one.
