Video: Spurs coach praises ‘humble’ youngster who is making an impact in North London

Tottenham academy coach Sam Cox has praised Japhet Tanganga and claimed that the defender deserves his first-team opportunities for the hard work he has put in over the years.

Tanganga was handed a surprise Premier League debut by Jose Mourinho for the visit of Liverpool in January and the youngster certainly did not let the Portuguese down with an assured display.

Since then, the 21-year-old has gone on to make further appearances across the backline which has shown his versatility.

The central defender is said to have already opened talks with Tottenham over a new contract (TuttoMercatoWeb).

Cox, who also came through the Spurs academy set up believes that Tanganga is now reaping the rewards of his hard work whilst also outlining his hopes for Oliver Skipp.

There seems to be no arrogance with Tanganga and he seems very keen to learn, which certainly bodes well for his prospect of becoming a top player. I am also extremely excited by Skipp and believe he has all the qualities to be a better pivot than Harry Winks, who I would prefer to see in a slightly more advanced role.
