Video: Spurs man’s heart in mouth moment as penalty squeezes over the goal line

Gedson Fernandes’ loan spell at Tottenham has not gone according to plan for the youngster and it looks as though the midfielder could be back at Benfica before too long, with Mourinho admitting that Spurs are open to ending his 18-month loan prematurely (SPORT TV via The Express).

The midfielder has only managed one appearance for Spurs this season in all competitions, with almost all of his competitive action coming during the international breaks for Portugal’s Under-21s.

Fernandes started again for the Under-21s in their clash against Cyprus yesterday as Portugal came from a goal behind to win 2-1, thus sealing their place in next summer’s European Under-21 Championship.

The Spurs man scored a crucial penalty in first-half stoppage time to bring his side level but it was not the most convincing of strikes as it barely squeezed past Cyprus goalkeeper Andreas Paraskevas.

Tottenham fans will be well aware of Fernandes’ frailties from the spot as he missed a crucial penalty in the shootout against Norwich City in the FA Cup fifth round last season that saw the North Londoners eliminated from the competition.

His spot-kick on Saturday was not particularly convincing either but the Benfica loanee will be glad that he found the back of the net this time.
