Steven Bergwijn was the hero for the Netherlands this evening after his goal secured his country a place in next year’s World Cup finals in Qatar.
The Dutch headed into their fixture against Norway in a three-way shootout for automatic World Cup qualification in Group G between themselves, their opponents, and Turkey.
A Norwegian win could have seen Louis van Gaal’s side miss out on a World Cup spot altogether depending on Turkey’s result against Montenegro.
With the score level at 0-0 in the 84th minute, Arnaut Danjuma fed the ball across the box to Bergwijn, who fired a shot high into the net.
Bergwijn turned provider in injury time when a Norway corner was cleared and the Dutch launched a counter-attack which saw the Spurs man set up Memphis Depay unselfishly and the forward made no mistake to ensure all three points and a place at the top of the group table.

After missing out on a place in the Dutch squad for Euro 2020, hopefully, this goal will give Bergwijn the confidence boost he needs at Spurs, heading into this weekend’s match against Leeds United.
