Video: Tim Sherwood reveals how he saved Daniel Levy from £600k mistake

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has been reflecting on his time at the club and revealed the various disagreements he had with chairman Daniel Levy.

Sherwood was promoted from his role as assistant manager to permanent manager at Tottenham in December 2013. He held the role until the end of that season.

Since leaving the North London club, Sherwood has spent brief spells as manager of Aston Villa, and Director of Football at Swindon Town.

He is now better known for his punditry, but has valuable insights into the inner workings of Tottenham and Levy’s approach to running the club.

Having taken over from Andre Villas-Boas as first team coach, Sherwood inherited a team including Spanish striker Roberto Soldado. However, Sherwood opted to give a young Harry Kane a chance on the pitch instead with Levy prepared to sell the forward to Leicester City for £600,000 following advice from Franco Baldini that he was not of Premier League standard.

Speaking with Simon Jordan on his UpFront podcast, Sherwood shared some of the arguments he had with Levy about operations at the club and his team selections.

He said: “[Levy] used to have the perception that everyone should want to come to Tottenham because of the training ground, and look at the restaurants and the magnificent hand dryers that dry your hands in three seconds.

“And I used to say, ‘No one gives a s*** about that.”

On the choice to play Kane at the time, Sherwood added: “[Levy] got wind that Harry Kane is playing, so now he wants to question me on why he’s playing instead of Roberto Soldado. He says I’m devaluing a player he spent £29 million on.

“I said to him, ‘It never even crossed my mind that I’ll be devaluing him. I want to win the football match, do you?’”

Spurs Web Opinion

At the time, choosing a young striker over a reputable name like Roberto Soldado would have raised some eyebrows, but thankfully it all worked out and Kane became a legend at Spurs.

Hopefully, Spurs fans will not have to say goodbye to their start striker this season with plenty of speculation doing the rounds in the media over his future in N17.
