Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham Hotspur has been the subject of intense press speculation for a number of months.
The Belgian still has a year to run on his existing deal in North London but after the club activated the 12-month extension clause in January it also triggered a clause that allows him to leave for £25milion this summer up until the last two weeks before the transfer window closes (Telegraph).
Alderweireld was once again asked about where his future lies when the media descended on Hotspur Way yesterday as part of the build-up to the Champions League final.
The former Ajax player insisted that he has one year left on his contract and fully expects to still be at Spurs next season.
While strengthening the squad ahead of next season has to be a priority for Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy, they must also look to tie down some of our top talent such as Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen to new contracts.
Replacing the pair would certainly be more expensive than offering them contracts in line with what they deserve to be paid.
