Video: Toby Alderweireld scores his first goal since leaving Tottenham

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld netted his first goal for Al-Duhail last weekend since completing his exit from north London.

Alderweireld was named in the starting eleven for the Emir Cup clash at Al-Sailiya and broke the deadlock when he rose high to power home a header from a corner kick in the twelfth minute and went on to provide an assist as his side completed a 4-1 rout.

The 33-year-old left Tottenham last July after six yards at the club to move to the Qatari outfit.

The former Ajax man still had two years to run on his contract but admitted he wanted to leave in order to spend more time with his family in a much less demanding environment where he could be more involved in the lives of his children (433 Podcast).

Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen formed a formidable partnership during their time at Tottenham and would easily walk into the side to partner Cristian Romero if they were in their pomp.

Tottenham’s defence still is a cause for concern with a left-sided central defender a must in the summer window while the likes of Davinson Sanchez have proven time and time again that he cannot simply concentrate for a full ninety minutes.
