Video: Toby Alderweireld scores stunning last-minute goal to win Belgian title for Royal Antwerp

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has this evening won the Belgian Pro League in dramatic fashion for Royal Antwerp by scoring a stunning injury time goal.

Heading into today one of Royal Antwerp, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise or KRC Genk could have been crowned champions due to the play-off format which takes place in Belgium.

Finishing on top of the table after 34 games is no guarantee that a club will be champions. Instead, the top six teams at the end of the regular season are drawn to a Championship playoff after the points they achieved are cut in half. The pointing system is the same during the ten matches they play in the playoffs (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw).

Antwerp found themselves 2-1 behind at Genk in the 94th minute of the match, which if the result would have stayed the same it would have seen Genk take the title.

With his side needing just a point to eclipse Genk, Alderweireld found himself on the edge of the opposition penalty area deep into injury time and rifled the ball into the top corner to secure glory for his hometown side.

Alderweireld, who formed a formidable partnership with Jan Vertonghen left Spurs after six years at the club, joining the Qatari side Al-Duhail in July 2021 and moved back to his native Belgium in July of this year.

It was a sweet moment for the central defender who had received death threats towards his family from Genk supporters after he was on the scoresheet to defeat their rivals 2-1 last month (Daily Mail).
