Video: ‘Top of my list’ – Mourinho makes Vertonghen claim and talks coaching role

Jose Mourinho has paid tribute to Jan Vertonghen’s professionalism and the way he carried himself after the club confirmed the defender’s departure today.

The Belgian international has been an important player for the side in the majority of his eight seasons at the club but found himself struggling for playing time this season.

Even though the 33-year-old was not first-choice after Mourinho arrived in North London, the Portuguese coach insisted that the defender was always well behaved and set a great example for the young players coming through.

The Spurs boss also revealed that the door is open for the centre-back to return to Tottenham in a coaching role in the future if he so desired.

From the way Jose has talked about Jan over the past few months, it is clear that he has a lot of respect for him. For the Spurs boss to say that Vertonghen would be welcomed back to the club in a coaching role suggests that he feels the 33-year-old has the temperament required to get into football management/coaching.
