VIDEO: Townsend ‘wasn’t my first choice’ – Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has wished departed winger Andros Townsend good luck in the north-east after he completed his transfer to Newcastle United in a £12million deal.

The former Southampton boss admitted it was best for all parties for Townsend to leave Spurs in search of regular football.

Pochettino told the press: “I don’t want to speak about business. I think that it’s important for him to find a club that gave him the possibility to play consistently in the Premier League. It wasn’t here the possibility. We keep up a very good relationship. Always it’s about when the player needs to play and here we have a different player and maybe he wasn’t my first choice and it’s normal that the player always wants to play and when he has the possibility to join another club and the club believes that there was a good deal. I only wish all the best in the new project, in the new club.”

“Yes, I think the competition FA Cup that is exciting to play. I am excited to play tomorrow in Colchester – a different pitch, a different stadium, a different level and you can see the reality of football and the smell and all is different. No, yes, it’s true that we come from Barcelona, but we planned to go to Barcelona a month-and-a-half before, but it’s true that I am excited to play tomorrow in Colchester. I think that it’s the reality of football.”
