Troy Deeney has claimed he is still not convinced that central defence is Eric Dier’s best position and believes that the Tottenham man looks more comfortable as a holding midfielder.
Dier admitted in an interview last season that he believes centre-back is his best position (Evening Standard), despite making a name for himself as a defensive midfielder for both Tottenham and England.
Jose Mourinho shifted him to central defence permanently after the restart last season and the 26-year-old seems to have built a decent partnership with Toby Alderweireld at the back for Spurs.
Dier has also been used as a central defender by Gareth Southgate recently and while Deeney described the former Sporting Lisbon man as a ‘great player’, he admitted he is sceptical of Dier as a centre-half:
Here’s what the Watford striker told talkSPORT:
❌ “I’m still not convinced with Eric Dier as a centre-half.”
😖 “It doesn’t look as though Eric is comfortable in that role.”
💪 “He’s a great player & like to see him as a holding midfielder.”
Troy Deeney says Eric Dier shouldn’t play as a CB for England or #THFC.
