Patrick Vieira has been told by the French national coach that he needs regular first team football, if he is to continue his international career.
The midfielder is out of favour at Inter Milan and has been linked with moves to Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal in recent weeks.
Vieira, who has 107 caps – has been left out of the French squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands.
“Pat needs to play a lot to feel good and to get back to his best level,” said French boss Raymond Domenech.
“He has to keep playing. I hope he will start playing – at Arsenal or Inter Milan.”
