Walker-Peters is itching to catch the likes of Spurs in the Premier League table

Kyle Walker-Peters has revealed that Southampton are looking to finish as high as possible in the Premier League after reaching the 40 point tally.

The Spurs loanee was handed a rare start by Ralph Hasenhuttlin Southampton’s away fixture at Watford yesterday and played the full 90 minutes of the 2-0 win.

Walker-Peters started the season in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting eleven when he played the first three Premier League games of the campaign before suffering a hamstring injury and did not make a further top flight appearance for the North Londoners (transfermarkt).

The 23-year-old’s chances of game time did not improve following the arrival of Jose Mourinho having made just one appearance in the 3-1 away defeat at Bayern Munich in December.

The academy graduate has set his sights on climbing the table further and made a reference to trying to catch those who are positioned above them, which includes his parent club who are on 45 points.

Spurs registered their first win in eight matches in all competitions when they beat West Ham on Tuesday evening.

He told the official Southampton site: “Before the game, we wanted to show the boys we wanted it just as much as they do,

“We wanted to get 40 points, we wanted to get that landmark, and we knew that they’re trying to get away from the relegation zone

“I think, coming out with that victory, we’ve shown them that we wanted it a bit more and we knew what it took to win.

“That’s what we’ve been speaking about, we want to hit 40 points. You look at the teams above us now there’s a lot on 42, 43 and 45 points so we’re itching to try and get up there.

“Nobody is really talking about us but we’re right there so we’ll see what happens.”
