‘Want somebody better’ – Spurs legend urges club not to sign centre-back

Graham Roberts has claimed that Jannik Vestergaard is not of the quality that Tottenham need to improve their backline this summer.

If reports over recent weeks are to be believed, Fabio Paratici seems to be busy sorting out Tottenham’s deficiencies in central defence, with the club stepping up their pursuits of Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Vestergaard, who had a solid season for Southampton and impressed for Denmark in the Euros, is another centre-back rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar.

The centre back has just 12 months left on his current deal at St Mary’s and some reports have claimed that Jose Mourinho could look to beat his former club to the Saints star and take the Dane to the Stadio Olimpico.

Roberts believes that Vestergaard is no better than the centre-backs already at Tottenham, insisting that Nuno Espirito Santo should be aiming to sign a higher calibre of player than the Southampton man.

When asked about the club’s rumoured pursuit of Vestergaard, the legendary Spurs defend told Football Fancast: “He’s not better than what we’ve got already.

“You want somebody better than what you’ve got.

“I don’t think Vestergaard is top-notch so, if I was the manager, I’d say he’s not for me.”

The 28-year-old has improved considerably over the last 12 months and he demonstrated that newfound maturity in the Euros.

While I agree with Roberts that we could aim higher than Vestergaard, I certainly think that the Saints star would be an improvement over the options we have currently have at centre-back.
